Public Interest Law Initiative Releases Sourcebook

The Public Interest Law Initiative (PILI) has launched a new publication entitled "Enabling Civil Society: Practical Aspects of Freedom of Association." This is a practical sourcebook for activists, lawyers, government officials and others interested in how freedom of association relates to the legal regulation of NGOs.

The publication sheds new light on some of the most topical freedom of association problems, such as appropriate limits on governmental efforts to regulate the political activities of NGOs. Of particular note are the extensive primary and analytical materials relating to the standards and jurisprudence of the Council of Europe.

The Sourcebook has the following objectives:

  • to be a resource for NGOs and other actors of civil society in dealing with challenges undermining the growth and development of NGOs and the wider civil society
  • to explore the possible ways for government and civil society actors to work together to implement legal commitments and thereby enhance the ability of civil society to make positive contributions to economic and social development
  • to encourage an open discussion of NGO concerns, as well as serious consideration of the need to enable the third sector to be a full, engaged and constructive participant in the development of the country.
